Analysis and Interpretation of the Record of Climatic Variability

Carol Green

The spectrum view of variability is a powerful and flexible tool for comprehending climate variability. In Mitchell's landmark study from 1976, it was used to express a very broad range of climate fluctuations from millions of years to days on a single graph with log scales. For pointing the causal relationships between forcing variability and climate response variability, the spectrum technique is extremely helpful. However, the Earth system has a significant amount of inherent unpredictability, and it is possible for it to react to outside forces in a complicated way.
