In genetics, shotgun sequencing is a method used for sequencing random DNA strands. It is named by using analogy with the unexpectedly expanding, quasi-random shot grouping of a shotgun. Due to this size restrict, longer sequences are subdivided into smaller fragments that may be sequenced one after the other, and these sequences are assembled to offer the overall collection.
